I am sorry but there are a bunch of ways to get a lookup within the same site collection e.g. just create a Site Column (at the root web level in a SC) which is lookup on a List at the root level and then use that site column everywhere including subsites.

The real challenge is how to use a lookup across site collection!!!

Is there anyway to do it?

when I upgraded my sharepoint 2007 portal to sharepoint 2010 it failed in upgrading the lists that have the cross-site lookup field.
is there a solution for this ?

Hi Tony,

Are you still maintaining this product? I've a question about the Datasheet view. We are looking into using this cross site lookup product because it add a lot of value. Now we do not have to copy (clone) data anymore to other sites, which is a good improvement.

In the datasheet view it is NOT possible to copy and past cross-site lookup fields! Is this correct? If yet, can this be solved? Or is there a workaround?

This editing in a datasheet view is very important for us and prevents us from using your product at this stage.

Thanks for this Tony, it really is quite useful. The only issue I have come across is that we use a site template to create further subsites and the Cross-Site column works great on the template site. When I create a new site using the template the Cross-Site column breaks and when trying to go to the List Settings the following error page is displayed:

"List does not exist

The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user. at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequestInternalClass.GetListsWithCallback(String bstrUrl, Guid foreignWebId, String bstrListInternalName, Int32 dwBaseType, Int32 dwBaseTypeAlt, Int32 dwServerTemplate, UInt32 dwGetListFlags, UInt32 dwListFilterFlags, Boolean bPrefetchMetaData, Boolean bSecurityTrimmed, Boolean bGetSecurityData, ISP2DSafeArrayWriter p2DWriter, Int32& plRecycleBinCount)

It has issue in coverting special character such as it converts & to & etc. Have anybody faced this issue.

How do I remove site columns that were based on a cross-site lookup? I have some "orphaned" site columns due to lists that were removed.

This is a great series. I am writing an application to import data into the term store on a regular basis. Would it make sense to make this a service application? How does it work with a timer job?

btw: I could not register with SharePoint solutions - registration page broken i think.

Looks interesting. Given that it is free, and your disclaimer says it is not supported, it seems only reasonable that you would offer the source code for the project somewhere. Where might I find it? Without source or support, I'm quite wary of adding this to a production system.

Does this actually store as a lookup or as single line of text? For example, if I change the source does it update the selection like a true lookup? Also does it link back to the original item?

My team used your webpart called 'Universal Comments" for Amway's internal Innovations website. Currently, the webpart is displaying a person's user id and we would prefer to use the user's name. My team can't edit the code for this webpart. Is there a way you can modify the webpart to display the user name instead of the user id?

What permissions do you have to have in order to add custom column that uses cross-site lookup? I try to create a cross-site lookup and get a 403 forbidden error. But it works as administrator, which I am not.
